Walk to Hockwold, England for Fish & Chips!

Okay, soooo on my first night in England, my fellow counselors (Rey, Beth, Kaylee, Paul and Bri) and I walked 3 miles to the closest city to get dinner from the Feltwell U.S. Airforce Base where we're being housed. Geesh, what a way to start out the summer haha, pure adventure! We saw the scenery of England firsthand and it was unbelievable! Nothing really monumental, but just the simple fields, occasional brick buildings and jumping into the grass for every crazy British car passing us on the wrong side of a narrow road...;-). So fun! Everything was so quaint, it smelled like history and it was a serious adventure haha. We were told there was a small pub "just down the way" in Hockwold, and once we got to the New Inn - Restaurant and Beer Garden, we quickly learned that they don't serve food Sunday afternoons. Of course, right? Seriously?! Psh, I should have remembered that...Anyhow, he started to give us directions to another place so we ended up telling him that we had walked from the base, so saint-of-a-British-man handed us menus and said he'd start the fryer for some Fish & Chips! It was the greatest hospitality I think I've been shown in a really long time. Very refreshing and just plain awesome. They seated us at a table for 6 (perfect!) and the only other available seating were two small tables that could seat a pair each. It was honestly adorable and always what I pictured a pub to look like. To make it easy, we all ordered Fish & Chips. Our first meal HAD to be a traditional host country meal!! Duh. His wife brought us jugs of water and soon he brought out gigantic plates of Fish & Chips with coleslaw and peas. Lovely combo. Chips are filling fyi and their coleslaw was DELICIOUS! To show our appreciation, we ate the peas. It was amazing though. We all chatted it up a bit while listening to the restaurant owner, his family and a few others sitting outside in the Beer Garden jeering on a World Cup game. On a sidenote, I grabbed a coaster for a local beer. It was SO neat though! We kept saying that some things hadn't been working out for us since we had arrived, but in the end we were getting lucky with a lot of other things. The things that count I think. I can't wait to share more! I definitely have more stories, but not enough time right now. I'll post more pictures asap! We had an awesome Taco Tuesday night and today we went bowling on the Lakenheath Base after spending a day at the Youth Center! This weekend we're going to Cambridge, then a BBQ in a city South of Cambridge at a friend's house where they're celebrating the Brits playing in another World Cup game - followed by a night in London...aka my birthday night!!!!! Completely forgot about my birthday with all this craziness ps. So...Happy Birthday to me haha. Ice Bar drink and a day of touring the city! Can't wait and so excited to share it with all of my loved ones as soon as I get back. Promise! Pictures and stories galore. I want to share every moment with you all and I look forward to getting into a rhythm here so that I can do a better job of it ;-) Love you all! Cheers. XOXO.
